Ice-Out Weekend

April 25th through 27th, 2003

Lake Lucerne
We arrived at 5:00 PM on Friday and found that the ice went out about 6 hours earlier. There were a few cubes left in the middle of the lake near the Water's Edge bar but they didn't last the night.

The north shore loon is back.

The temperatures all weekend were comfortable. Lows in the 30's°F and highs in the 60's°F. Sunny skies made it feel even warmer.
Lake Lucerne
Rising water is getting close to covering some docks! The 14.5 inches measured above the nail marks the highest water since the nail was put in 2 years ago.
Lake Lucerne
We put in the piers. There seemed to be a race to get piers in this year. The day after ice-out saw dozens of piers put in.
Lake Lucerne
The lake is very clear. The bottom in this picture is under about 5 to 6 feet of water.

Some people pressed me into doing the first swim* of the year on Saturday. Swim start time : 13:40:30.

* Swimming is defined here as going deliberately into the lake and going completely underwater. .
Lake Lucerne
Swim end time :13:41:03. Burrrrrr!
Lake Lucerne
After the swim we found and conquered the "Big Rock".
Lake Lucerne
In the front of the "Big Rock" is a tree with 3 branches growing close together. 20 years ago as kids, we wedged a rock in between those branches and dubbed the stone the "Little Rock". The tree has now grown around the "Little Rock" covering about 20% of it.

A wireless water temperature sensor was put back into the lake at the end of a pier in about 6 feet of water. In the detailed weather section of www.knottlane.com the lake temperature is refered to as the "Soil Temperature". I'll try to change that to "Lake Temperature" in the future.

The second and less excellent webcam is working but is in a testing phase. I'll put up a link soon.
Lake Lucerne
The lake level is now 14.5 inches above the nail!

Rain had been predicted on Sunday, but when we left at 10:30 AM the weather was wonderful.
