Peak Color Day

October 2 & 3, 1998

Lake Lucerne
We had not planned on coming up to the lake this weekend but the computer systems in our Manitowoc office had issues. On Friday, Mrs Nemo and I went up and fixed 'em and then, since we were almost a third of the way there already, continued north to catch peak color. Maybe it was this year's dry weather or this year's heat but the trees are putting on one of the best displays ever. The golds, reds, oranges and yellows have to be seen to be believed.

The Timber Shore's crabapple crop was so bursting with fall ripeness that they look like maraschino cherries. The urge to run out and make some Manhattens (the king of cocktails!) or Rob Roys (The king's gaelic cousin) was almost overwhelming.

The view from the fire tower atop Sugarbush Hill confirmed that this was "Peak Color Weekend".

New elements were added to the bar on the north end of the lake. White concrete cylinders dotting the area seem to be marking the road, a parking lot, or a line of death, or something.

The water that makes up Lake Lucerne is currently at 65°F and about 2 feet lower than it was last Spring. Whoever pulled the drain plug on the lake needs to put it back. I don't know for sure who the plug puller is, but if the plugs resemble white concrete cylinders, I have a hunch.
