Longest Day of the Year Week
June 18th through 28th, 1997          


During this week, the sun was up longer than any other time of the year (even if it was behind some clouds during some of the week.) In addition to a few clouds, that sun brought along with it 80s F, calm water, and more than a little sunburn.


Fishing has been great. Many fisher people reported their limit/fill.

The first corn of the year is for sale in town. It's good roasted over a fire but better roasted over a fire and slathered with butter and salt.


The first marshmallows were browned over the fire after the sun went down. Some were more blacked than browned.

In addition to campfires and marshmallows, nightlife on the North end of the lake includes card games, trolling for the big ones, and moonlight hikes.
And fireflies! West Shore Drive is thick with them.

The moon was so bright this week that you really didn't need a light to go for a midnight canoe paddle. Though legally, you really should have a light.
With the lake warming, it was time to visit and say "Hi" to the cribs and fish.

The bass were plentiful as they always are in Lake Lucerne.
We saw some walleye! Well...a walleye. It was almost legal (18").

The lake started at 65 F. After a week of 80 F days and 60 F nights, the lake temperature stood at 73 F. Back in Milwaukee, they got a 9 inch rainstorm. Good for them. It's a good thing we didn't get hit by all that rain. The lake level is pretty high and all that wet would have put just about every pier (and maybe a few cabins and islands!) underwater. The weather was so nice that, aside from a few corn runs, we never left the lake until it was time to head back to work.
